The Wisdom & Strength You Have Within: Head, Heart, and Gut for Courageous Living

Imagine you’re on a solo expedition, brother.

Not through the Amazon jungle, but through the uncharted territory of your own life.

You’ve got a map, and a compass (your goals and values), but the path is filled with twists, challenges, and the occasional dead-end.

How do you navigate?

Here’s the secret weapon most adventurers forget:

You have three wise men guiding you every step of the way — your head, your heart, and your gut.

The Head: The Strategist

Think of your head as the seasoned explorer, the one with the map and compass.

It analyzes information, makes logical decisions, and helps you plan your course.

This is where you set your goals, break them down into actionable steps, and strategize about potential obstacles.

Here’s the catch:

The head alone can get stuck in analysis paralysis.

It might overthink every move, get caught up in “what-ifs,” and hold you back from taking action.

That’s where your other two wise men come in.

The Heart: The Compass of Passion

Do Shin — Way of the Heart

Your heart is your compass, the one that points you toward what truly matters.

It’s your source of passion, purpose, and those deep-seated desires that fuel your journey.

Maybe you crave financial freedom, dream of traveling the world, or yearn to build a strong family.

The heart reminds you of the “why” behind your goals, keeping you motivated when the going gets tough.

But the heart can also lead you astray on emotional detours.

It might get swayed by fleeting desires or fall prey to fear and self-doubt. That’s when you need to listen to your gut.

The Gut: The Voice of Intuition

Your gut is your inner radar, a powerful intuition that often speaks in subtle whispers or strong hunches.

Have you ever gotten a “bad feeling” about a situation that later turned out bad?

That’s your gut in action.

It processes information on a subconscious level, picking up on cues your head might miss.

However, the gut can be easily ignored.

We often drown it out with our head’s logic or our heart’s desires.

Learning to listen to your gut takes practice, but it’s a crucial skill for courageous living.

The Courageous Trio in Action

So, how do these three wise men work together to guide your courageous journey?

Here’s an example:

Let’s say you dream of starting your own business (heart).

Your head kicks in, researching the market, creating a business plan, and outlining your financial needs.

However, as you delve deeper, your gut might be sending you warning signs — a nagging feeling about a lack of experience, unease about a potential business partner, or a sense that the timing isn’t right.

This is where courageous living comes in.

It’s about acknowledging all the voices — the head’s caution, the heart’s desire, and the gut’s intuition.

Then, with all the information on the table, you make a well-informed decision, a decision fueled by courage, not just blind ambition.

How Hapkido Helped Me Hone My Three Wise Men

For most of my adult life, I’ve been telling people to train in martial arts.

I strongly believe that there is a style and a teacher for everyone.

I feel that martial arts is the one hobby that will help you to grow physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.

And that you can do it for your whole life!

Martial arts helps you to develop your head, learning new techniques, strategies, and tactics to overcome the challenges you face on the mat. You learn how to learn from your failures, create plans, and see how your plans work out.

They also help you to develop your heart. You build resilience, determination, and fortitude. But also, you learn to create a safe training environment, where you care for your partners, so you don’t run out of partners to train with.

And most importantly, you learn to listen and hone the voice of your gut. When you’re doing dynamic exercises with a partner, especially if you’re sparring or rolling, you have no time to think, you learn to listen to your feelings and what’s around you.

And all these skills you hone, not only apply on the mat but also off the mat, in life.

I’ve been fortunate to train under GM Bong Soo Han from ‘87-’07 and it’s fueled most of my martial arts journey.

But I’ve also had the good fortune to train in Aikido in Honolulu and Cairo and explore other schools in Los Angeles; Wing Chun, Tai Chi, Kali, and Penchak Silat.

I’m now a new white belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at Meraki BJJ and loving it.

Give martial arts a try, find a good school that teaches with a heart and you won’t regret it.

Developing Your Inner Wisdom Council

Here are some tips to strengthen your connection with your three wise men:

  • Head: Make time for dedicated planning and strategy sessions. Read books, attend workshops, and actively learn new skills.
  • Heart: Regularly revisit your core values and long-term goals. What truly matters to you? What legacy do you want to leave behind?
  • Gut: Practice mindfulness and meditation. Pay attention to subtle bodily sensations and recurring thoughts. Journal your feelings and intuitions.

Remember, courageous living isn’t about ignoring fear or suppressing your desires.

It’s about integrating the wisdom of your head, heart, and gut to make powerful decisions and navigate the uncharted territory of your life.

With these three wise men by your side, brother, you’ll be well on your way to building a life of purpose, fulfillment, and badass achievement.

P.S. If you’re struggling to find your path so that you’re 3 Wise Men can guide you, you probably need some help with your personal leadership, right?
